About U of I Extension
U of I Extension is based in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) and works with all colleges and units of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The Land Grant University system was instituted in 1862 to provide practical education to state residents, to help them use and apply knowledge. The mission of the land grant, often summarized as the triad of teaching – research – extension, aims to engage researchers, community members, and University students in generating and sharing knowledge. However, it is through Extension that the university extends knowledge, and demonstrates how knowledge is applied as practical solutions beyond the classroom. Extension is often described as engagement or outreach, but Extension goes beyond dissemination by collaborating with stakeholders across the state to share information and gather input that also informs research.
