To explore how the schools can harness the powerful features of games for learning, the Illinois Association of Computing Educators is putting together a panel of experts to discuss ways to effectively deploy games for learning.
Modern video and computer games offer a rich landscape of adventure and challenge that appeal to a growing number of Americans. People acquire new knowledge and complex skills from gameplay, suggesting gaming could help address one of the nation’s most pressing needs — strengthening our system of education and preparing workers for 21st-century jobs. Numerous studies of American competitiveness completed in the past few years have emphasized that America’s position in the world depends increasingly on maintaining leadership in technology. And they emphasize that this can only be accomplished if American workers are prepared to move quickly in response to technical change and be ready for new jobs and careers as they emerge. The success of complex video games demonstrates games can teach higher-order thinking skills such as strategic thinking, interpretative analysis, problem-solving, plan formulation and execution, and adaptation to rapid change.
At the collegiate level, esports programs have been spreading since Robert Morris University in Chicago began a varsity program in 2014. Since then, the sport has boomed, with about 50 programs and a governing body, the National Association of Collegiate Esports.
Illinois College and Illinois Wesleyan University also have programs. Some colleges around the U.S. even offer standout players scholarships. They compete online in a complex game called League of Legends, which the school says teaches many lessons; teamwork, critical thinking, thinking strategically, resource management, starting a project and completing it. It's a really great way to learn things that employers are looking for.
Professional Development Units will be available for this event.
