What is the ICTM State Math Contest?
The purpose of the ICTM State Math Contest is to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement, encourage independent study, stimulate interest in mathematics, and provide a wholesome meeting ground for students and teachers of mathematics through academic competition.
The high school portion of the contest consists of two parts, a regional competition held at sites throughout the state in February, with top teams and individuals advancing to the state finals, held at the University of Illinois, in May. Events at the contest include both individual and team events and an oral presentation event. Teams compete in one of four divisions, determined by school size. The ICTM math contest is competition at its very best -- an exciting, challenging contest where the students are the stars. The team spirit and enthusiasm generated by this contest have all the competitiveness of a sport tournament. As many as 50 students or as few as 1 student can participate from each school.
The Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) is a non-profit, professional organization dedicated to encouraging an active interest in all areas of mathematics and mathematics education, to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics and the role of mathematics in other disciplines, to promote research in the teaching and learning of mathematics, and to provide opportunities for exchange of views regarding the teaching and learning of mathematics.
