Nationally, 1 in 6 youth have thoughts of suicide, and 1 in 12 attempt suicide. In Illinois, 47,000 youth report making a suicide attempt, and nearly 100 die each year. While providers who work with youth are in an opportune position to recognize and intervene, they may be limited in their understanding of suicide and may not feel comfortable or competent to address the issue.
Kim Bryan, director of Rattle the Stars, addresses these concerns in an interactive workshop on suicide intervention. This training will educate participants on the scope and impacts of suicide, risk factors for suicide (including discussions of high-risk populations), and how to recognize and intervene with youth who may have thoughts of suicide. Particular emphasis will be placed on effective ways of talking about suicide, screening for suicide risk, limiting access to lethal means, and making appropriate service referrals.
Cost: $30 to attend for CEU’s. $10 to attend without CEU’s.
