Website and/or Calendar Links
A Birding Big Year is an informal competition among birders to see who can tally the most species within a specific geographical area and within a calendar year. Big years are conducted at all levels from global tallies to backyard tallies, and this year the hottest competition will be the first ever Allerton Birding Big Year!
Although the real prize is observing the diversity of birds in their natural habitat, we will be offering some material and experiential prizes! Each participant that registers for the contest and enters at least one bird sighting into eBird will be entered into a lottery for a Spring 2019 guided hike to the Allerton Heron Rookery. The participant that observes the most bird species at Allerton during 2018 will win an original bird illustration by Allerton Natural Areas Manager Nate Beccue.
The rules are simple:
1. Register online for the contest. Registration is FREE! By registering you will receive email notifications about bird hikes, mist netting demonstrations, and bird sightings at Allerton Park.
2. Go birding at Allerton (map (PDF))
Over 200 different bird species have been recorded at Allerton Park. For a list of what species you might encounter during your Big Year, check out the Bird Checklist (PDF). Or visit the Birds of Allerton Park (PDF) for more information on some of the common species you might encounter at Allerton Park.
*Some areas of Allerton Park are closed New Years Day and Christmas Day. The Lost Garden area of Allerton Park is always open.
