The Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies (CEAPS) is the steward of campus-wide teaching, research, programming, and outreach on East Asia, as well as Southeast Asia and the Pacific. CEAPS serves almost 100 affiliate specialists on East Asia, as well as over 30 off campus affiliates across the state. CEAPS strives to broadly support the research, teaching, and service missions of the University of Illinois.
CEAPS, along with its consortium partner the East Asian Studies Center (EASC) at Indiana University, is currently a Title VI National Resource Center Consortium for East Asia devoted to the enhancement of campus teaching and learning on East Asia and to outreach programming on East Asia for educators, the public, and media and business professionals.
CEAPS was established in 1964 as the Center for Asian Studies. In 1984 the center was renamed and in 1990 the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures was established in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences to house faculty and course offerings in the language and humanistic study of East Asia.
Building on existing and emerging strengths, our current Title VI (2014-2018) programming is guided by our Consortium theme, “Cultures of Global Citizenship and Learning in the Pacific Century: East Asian Studies for Campuses of the Future.” This theme encompasses interdisciplinary examination of the vital world region of East Asian Studies from a global perspective and captures the dynamism of IL/IN’s globally diverse campuses and growing East Asian institutional partnerships and international engagement. Proposed activities will integrate the cultural and linguistic strengths of our domestic and EA faculty and students into innovative East Asian teaching and learning experiences; create an “IL/IN Corridor” for East Asian studies that serves community colleges and MSIs in the two states; develop more sustainable and internationalized teacher education programs; partner with the joint UCLA/USC consortium for national dissertation workshops on East Asian Studies in global historical perspectives; and bolster K-20 EA language education and assessment programs, strengthening our regional pipeline for cultivation of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language specialists.
