Website and/or Calendar Links
Originally founded in 1951, the Department of Kinesiology & Community Health Sports Fitness Program has the distinction of being one of the longest running summer youth fitness programs in the country. The program began as a service to the communities of Champaign and Urbana with the intent of providing an opportunity for children to stay physically active in an organized environment during the summer months.
2018 Program Dates
The 2018 Sports Fitness Program begins on Monday, June 11th and ends on Thursday, August 2nd. (Please note there will be no programming the week of July 2-6, 2018.)
One-Week Enrollment Options (Monday - Thursday)
Once again, the Sports Fitness Program has set up one-week enrollment as an option (Mondays through Thursdays). You may now register your child anywhere from one, up to all seven weeks. Just simply select the weeks you would like your child to attend the program on the registration site. Because the Sports Fitness Program is a self-supported program and must cover all operating expenses through enrollment fees, they cannot allow partial week enrollment.
Over the years, many parents have inquired about the possibility of Sports Fitness including programming on Fridays. The 2018 program will once again offer six Friday sessions as a separate enrollment option. They will again limit the enrollment in the Friday sessions to 50 children and offer special activities that we aren’t able to provide in our regular sessions. You must register for the Friday sessions individually. Lunch at Ikenberry Commons will be included in the cost of this enrollment. See the pricing section of the Sports Fitness website for costs and enrollment information.
Programming includes options for full or half-day enrollment as well as enrolling children for up to seven weeks of programming. The goal is to provide a quality, developmental, physical activity program for children.
The 2018 Sports Fitness Program will be accepting children 7-13 years of age. The children will be assigned to groups by age:
- "Cubs" - 7 & 8 year olds
- "Colts" - 9 & 10 year olds
- "Bears" - 11-13 year olds
Please note: Some variation in these groupings may occur to balance the numbers in each group.
Only 40 children will be enrolled in each group per session. In past years the program has filled up very quickly, so with the limited enrollment you will need to register early.
Note on facilities/location
The 2018 Sports Fitness Program will be conducted on University of Illinois Campus Recreation facilities. This year, with a few exceptions, all activities (morning and afternoon) will again be based at the ARC and nearby fields/courts. When the program must deviate from this due to facility conflicts, advance notification will be sent out in regard to any changes of the drop-off and pick-up locations.
