ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Damaris Dunham graduated in 2017 from the University of Illinois with a BFA in Painting. She generally works with oil paint and spent much of her undergraduate career exploring what it means to paint people and push the boundaries of traditional portraiture. As an artist and as a human being, Damaris is interested in the subconscious and how it relates to our habitual being in the world. Our lives are fueled by dreams and subconscious actions that come from a place deep inside us.
ABOUT THE COLLECTION:
The domain of representational painting can be difficult to navigate. Representation inherently depicts what is physically present within the frame of the substrate. Through painting, the artist seeks to move beyond the literal and link the dream world and the corporeal (which tends to evade creativity and cling to rationality). Many of her paintings depict a dreamlike quality and situate the figures in an ambiguous and elusive space; the figures exist just out of the focus of reality. In her work, Damaris often references the idea of an encounter of sorts, as if the painting itself serves as a portal from the conscious to subconscious.
