Description:

Vladimir Putin, as a political and cultural figure, seems to be everywhere these days – from U.S elections, to Syria, Central Asia, Ukraine, and the Republic of Tuva.  He makes appearances with Steven Seagal, on Saturday Night Live, and maintains a strong presence on various social media platforms. Russia and Putin are becoming synonymous in the media. Has he eclipsed the Russian state in the eyes of world public opinion? What historical and current factors are contributing to his prominence on the world stage?  The panel will explore the academic perspectives and sources that can shed light on Putin’s larger-than-life stature.

Panelists:

  • Diane Koenker, Professor of History
  • Carol Leff, Associate Professor of Political Science
  • Mark Steinberg, Professor of History
  • Richard Tempest, Associate Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures
