Description:

Magnetism, Electromagnetism, Solar Weather, Power Systems: From the Solar Wind to Power Systems Impacts

A professional development opportunity for mathematics, science, and special education teachers, associated with an NSF funded research project intended to improve the scientific understanding of the processes governing the impacts severe solar storms on our power distribution system.

Workshop runs from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm each day.

Workshop participants will:

  • Explore magnets and the relationships between electricity and magnetism
  • Study space weather and the dynamic sun
  • Learn about our electricity delivery system
  • Investigate the risks geomagnetically induced currents pose to the power grid 
  • Collect and analyze data
  • Make mathematical models
  • Create standards aligned curriculum materials
  • Tinker
  • Wonder
  • Collaborate
  • Communicate

Responsibilities

  • Attend and participate in 5 workshop days (35 hours), June 5 ‐ June 9, 2017
  • Complete pre and post online surveys (~2 hours) and subject matter tests
  • Plan and participate in a curriculum collaboration activity for your classroom
  • Implement activities from the summer workshops in your classroom
