At only two venues on its 21-concert North American tour—Krannert Center and Carnegie Hall—music director Andrea Marcon and the Venice Baroque Orchestra will bring to the United States Antonio Vivaldi's sumptuous masterpiece Juditha triumphans (Judith triumphant). In this oratorio—the only one to survive of the four Vivaldi is known to have written—orchestra, solo voices, and chorus join to portray the dramatic story of the Hebrew woman Judith overcoming the invading Assyrian general Holofernes and his army. Commissioned by the Republic of Venice after its naval victory over the Ottoman Empire at Corfu in 1716, the work features some of Vivaldi's most beautiful melodies and a trove of rare historical instruments. On their third visit to Krannert Center, Venice Baroque Orchestra—a dynamic ensemble of musicians who love what they do and who let that enjoyment show—will enthrall us with their "sheer delight in virtuosity" (The New York Times).
