Bilocation: A Virtual Reality Experience

Champaign, IL – Friday, December 2, 2016 – “Bilocation: A Virtual Reality Experience” at Gallery 217 – an exhibition that allows you to experience being in two places at once.

Bilocation can be defined as the experience of being in two places at one time or the attachment we have to another place that we carry with us everywhere we are. Historically, people have tried to transport viewers to other places, both real and imagined, through panoramas, stereoscopes, Viewmaster, film, 3-D technology and more. Recent emergence of new accessible and affordable technologies has created the opportunity for virtual reality experiences through cell phones and simple viewers, like “Google Cardboard”. Through the use of digital media, cellular devices, and tablets, individuals are able to fill their desire to experience a place far beyond their present location. This exhibition showcases the history or virtual reality, a series of virtual reality experiences, and artwork that further explores the concept of bilocation and virtual or alternative realities. The visual art on display includes work by Katie Gamble, Shengyuan He, Junhao Lu, Marie Maciejko, Susannah Papish, Chloe Torri, Luo Wang, Carla Winterbottom and the class of CS498.

“Bilocation: A Virtual Reality Experience” opens on Friday, December 2nd from 5:30 – 7:30pm and runs through December 8th. The technology and art in the exhibition parallel one another in order to build a unique bilocation event. The goal of the exhibition is to inspire viewers and trigger new interests as they are transported to a world beyond what they know and ultimately allowing visitors to feel as though they have been transported through a variety of visual experiences.

Gallery 217 is a multi-purpose art space that hosts various art shows, classes, and events. The gallery is home to Lola’s Brush, a small business that provides painting parties and lessons. As an off-campus venue, Gallery 217 enables community collaboration between the students at the University of Illinois as well as the locals to experience, learn about, and exhibit works of art. Gallery 217 is located at 9 E. University Ave., Champaign, IL 61820.

“Bilocation: A Virtual Reality Experience” is presented by the students in ARTE 475: Art Exhibition Practices. This class resides in the University of Illinois School of Art + Design. The students enrolled in this course have acquired knowledge during the semester regarding developing exhibitions and are thrilled to bring their own exhibition to life. Throughout the semester, ARTE 475 students have volunteered their time to help at the gallery and experience various exhibitions. The students collaborated to build this bilocation experience at Gallery 217. These students look forward to expanding their engagements beyond the university and into the community.
