Description:

The Companion Animal Related Emotions Pet Loss Helpline is a confidential telephone service offered through the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. People who are either grieving the loss of a companion animal or are anticipating a loss are encouraged to call. If you need a compassionate, understanding person to talk to, C.A.R.E. is there to listen and to support you.

The C.A.R.E. Pet Loss Helpline is available Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings 7-9 pm Central Time

About the Helpline

The C.A.R.E. Helpline was developed to provide a supportive outlet for people experiencing the actual or anticipated loss of their cherished companion animal.

The Helpline is staffed by veterinary students who understand the importance of the bond you share with your animal friend and the emotions involved when that bond is threatened or altered. The students have received training by professional grief counselors and undergo continued supervision by a licensed clinical social worker.

The C.A.R.E. Helpline focus is on the array of emotions related to pet loss.  They are unable to discuss specifics of your animal's illness and ask that you contact your veterinarian for questions of a medical nature.

Also, the C.A.R.E. Helpline is not a mental health hotline and volunteers are not trained to provide mental health services.  If the concerns presented during a Helpline call are beyond the scope of the services available, volunteers will assist you in identifying appropriate referral options in your community.
