For the academic year 2013–2014, Krannert Art Museum (KAM) is offering partnership opportunities to Champaign–Urbana public schools. Due to the increased demand, schools must now apply and be accepted as a partner. Applications are due May 3, 2013, and schools will be notified by May 24, 2013.

KAM-WAM-JAM: A more intensive partnership with KAM

This option is more intensive and is for those schools who want to extend the KAM–WAM experience. The format is open for the school and KAM to work out.

Possible options:

  • A few classroom lessons and a few regular one-hour museum visits throughout the year, which then lead up to the KAM–WAM experience.
  • A KAM–WAM week at the beginning of the school year, with follow-up classroom and museum visits throughout the rest of the year.

Requirements

Number of Students

A maximum of 50 students (2 classrooms) can be at KAM at one time. Participating classes do not all need to be at the same grade level.

Teacher Teams

It is essential for all members to want to be part of the team and value the experience they are creating for their students. For fifty students, a team of five teachers from the school, one of whom must be a special education teacher, is required. In addition to these five, an ESL teacher, if needed, must accompany the students to the museum. There are no other set rules as to who must be on the team. As stated previously, the participating classrooms do not need to be at the same grade level. It is more important to have a team willing to work together and with KAM.

The teachers who are often part of the team are:

  • Classroom teachers
  • Art teacher
  • Music teacher
  • Literacy specialist
  • Enrichment teacher

Lesson Development and Teaching:

To plan for a successful collaboration between the school and KAM, it is important for the teaching team and KAM educators to spend time together to discuss overall goals and logistics as well as to develop, plan, and familiarize themselves with their lessons and the museum.

• KAM–WAM–JAM: Teacher teams will be released from school to attend a full-day preparatory workshop at KAM each semester. Both the Champaign and Urbana district administrations have approved this time away from school. Additional after-school meetings will likely be required. 

Art teachers – please know that a studio room will not be available. All art activities and materials must be dry and approved by KAM ahead of time.

Impact on Students 

After students complete their engagement with KAM, teachers will be sent an online survey to get feedback. In addition, the school is required to send KAM some sort of assessment of the students' experience at the museum. The assessment may be informal and does not need to be a particular format. Suggestions:

• Notes, including text and images, from the students describing what they remembered most
• Pre- and post-museum-experience written answers to a few questions, such as "What is art?" and "What is a museum?"
