Description:

As a part of University of Illinois Extension, the Illinois Water Resources Center (IWRC) works with scientists, water professionals, and communities to address the state’s water resource challenges. Every year, they award roughly $40,000 to university-based researchers throughout the state and help scientists working on regional issues secure funding through the National Competitive Grants Program.

IWRC outreach specialists partner with government agencies, universities, and communities to educate professionals and the public on key water resource issues, including private well care, water and wastewater treatment, nutrient management, and emerging contaminants. Through research conferences and memberships with the National Institutes of Water Resources, the Illinois Water Resources Center also helps researchers and students connect with others working on water resource issues.

The Illinois Water Resources Center is one of 54 federally-funded water research institutes in the United States. These centers, which collectively form the National Institutes for Water Resources, were created by the Water Resources Act of 1964 and are funded by the U.S. Geological Survey.
